Advantages and Disadvantages of Solar Power

In recent months money has become harder and harder to earn. Some companies are closing up. Others are laying off many of their workers. Thus people are now looking for ways to earn extra by getting second and third jobs and at the same time are looking at every option to save money like cutting monthly utility bills. One way being suggested to decrease utility bills is to use solar power or even build a solar panel. Though many say that you will really be able to save a lot of money using solar energy, it is still advisable that you look at the advantages and disadvantages of solar power first before you have one installed because after all it is a very important investment that you are going to make.

Here is a list of the advantages and disadvantages of solar power.

Let us begin with the advantages. First, we all know that fuel prices are getting higher and higher these days and along with it, electric charges are also rising in staggering levels. There are actually reports that say that charges rise at levels not going lower than 6 % a year and over the last three years or so, the increase has reached up to 30 %. With solar power installed in your house, you will not be affected by any increase in costs of fuel.

Using solar power also helps save the environment. Sounds big right? This is true because solar power does not pollute our atmosphere. Green house gases and harmful pollutants are not used. If many will use solar power in their homes, less coal, oil and natural gases will be used by power generating plants. About 30 % of air pollution comes from these. Reducing this will tremendously help solve global warming and prevent climate change.

Using solar electric system also guarantees that you will have electric supply twenty four hours a day, seven days a week. Electricity is produced even on cloudy days and rainy days. Of course more electricity is generated when the sun is up but it to generate power, even a little light will do.

Lastly, solar electric systems need very little to no maintenance at all and can be very cheap if you know how to build a solar panel.

But like any other systems, solar power also has some disadvantages. The first of which is the cost of having it installed in your house. If you have money concerns, having one installed may really post a big problem. But if you look at it in the long run, the amount you will save each month will be more than what you will spend in the installation. Besides, over the years, the cost of solar electric systems has steadily decreased.

Another disadvantage is the location of your house. There has to be a place where the solar panels will be installed where it can get direct sunshine. Though it was said above that power can be produced even during rainy days, your solar system still needs direct sunlight to optimize its efficiency.

Once installed on your roof, it will be hard for you to renovate your roofing in the future is you so decide to give your house a new look. It will cause you a lot to renovate because of the solar panels installed.

If you are thinking of having a solar electric system installed in your house to save on utility bills, go over these advantages and disadvantages of solar power to help you decide and perhaps build a solar panel yourself.
